Top Tips

Want to  to make your heating system more efficient and save you money on your fuel bills?

Here are Ambient Temperature's top tips:

1) Install a condensing boiler

The principle of a high efficiency condensing boiler is to recover  as much of the waste heat which is normally lost out of the flue of a non-condensing boiler. The best high efficiency condensing boilers convert more than 90% of their fuel into heat, compared to 78% for conventional types. A condensing boiler can be up to 30% more efficient than your existing boiler.

2) Have your central heating system power flushed

Your radiators and pipework may have scale or sludge deposits inside which will be reducing your system's efficiency.   When you install any new components they will disturb the existing gas central system and lead to the deposits and debris starting to circulate once more.  A power flush should be considered as part of the preparatory process before you install a replacement gas boiler.

3) Install thermostatic radiator valves

This will allow you to regulate individual room temperatures so you are not paying to heat spaces you do not  use regularly.  If your house has radiator heating and doesn't have Thermostatic Radiator Valves fitted you could save around 5-10% of your heating bills

4) Fit a programmable room thermostat

With a programmable thermostat, your heating system will operate less frequently, consume less energy and create lower utility bills. These modern units save energy by offering convenient, pre-programmed temperature settings and are generally more accurate than manual thermostats.

5) Install a foam lagged quick recovery hot water cylinder

Designed to heat your hot water quicker and keep it hot for longer.  These cylinders use a larger internal coil for more efficient heat transfer; a thicker foam insulation allows the temperatute to be retained for longer.

6) Replace your conventional boiler and hot water cylinder with a condensing combination boiler

You will save energy as you will only heat the hot water that you use.  The removal of your hot water cylinder is an added benefit, letting you reclaim the extra space.
